This movie gives us a look at one of the more interesting monsters
in Western mythology; the wurdulak. This sorrowful creature is a type of
vampire that preys upon those that it loved in life. If you’ve seen the
excellent Mario Bava film Black Sabbath
(and if you haven’t, you should!) you are already familiar with it.
In this
film, a city slicker breaks down while traveling through a rural forest. He
seeks shelter from a family that is besieged by wurdulaks. A witch is loose in
the forest and at night she visits graves and through some blood magic, creates
the monsters.
The
family patriarch decides to put an end to it by seeking out the witch and
killing her. However, when he returns to the family he has been transformed
into a wurdulak himself. Predictably, tragedy ensues.
The film
doesn’t explain itself, and I think that adds to its mystery. Why is the witch
tormenting this family? What is her origin? What do the wurdulaks do when there
are no more loved ones to prey on? None of these questions are answered. We
have to take everything on face value.
